Aside from our own Miss Universe bet Ariella Arida, full-blooded Filipina Riza Santos will compete for the prestigious Miss Universe pageant later this year.

Santos, a former housemate of “Pinoy Big Brother: Celebrity Edition 2,” was crowned as the Miss Universe Canada 2013 after dethroning initially declared winner Denise Garrido from Bradford. Santos was actually named first runner-up during the coronation night held on Saturday, May 25 (Sunday, May 26 in Manila time) at the St. Lawrence Centre for the Arts in Toronto.

According to the erratum posted on Miss Universe Canada website (www.beautiesofcanada.com), “during the validation of the computerized scoring results, a typo was discovered in the top 5 entries, which significantly impacted the final results of the competition.”

It said that a “human error” was made and the most coveted crown is truly belongs to Santos. It turned out that Garrido is actually placed third runner-up.

“We would like to offer our sincere apology to Denise Garrido for this human error discovered while validating the results…

“Beauties of Canada congratulates Riza Santos as the winner of Miss Universe Canada 2013 competition, and looks forward to working with her as she prepares to represent our country at Miss Universe 2013,” it said.

On Facebook, Santos shared her winning speech, “I would like to say thank you to God, my family, friends, and all of my supporters during this humbling yet rewarding journey to become Miss Universe Canada. I can't begin to express my gratitude and excitement to represent Canada on the international stage. It's an honour to represent our country and I ask you for your continued support and prayers.”

Santos’ parents are both Filipino – Ruel Santos from Bulacan and Dina Buenaventua from Bataan. She was raised in Calgary and became a naturalized Canadian citizen.

The 25-year-old beauty queen is veteran of beauty pageants, having represented the Canada in Miss Earth 2006 and Miss World 2011.

In Philippine showbiz industry, Santos has made a numerous appearance in TV shows and movies like “Dobol Trobol,” “When Love Begins,” and “Ikaw Parin Bonga ka Boy” after she won Second Big Winner in PBB in 2007.

Earlier to this, half-Filipina Ruth Jennifer Ondo Mouchita hailed as Miss Gabon 2013 last December 22, 2012 at the City of Democracy Hall in Libreville.

The 21-year-old black beauty will paint her country also at the upcoming Miss Universe pageant.

According to her Wikipedia entry, Mouchita “is the second Gabonese Beauty Queen who is a mixed race with Filipino and Gabonese Ancestry,” following Channa Divouvi in Miss Universe 2012. Mouchita's mother is a pure Filipina, while her father is a Gabonese.
