In an interview with “The Buzz” on Sunday, Manalac said he is very proud to be part of the show’s judges because he will be able to take part in honing a singer who could possibly be the country’s next superstar.
“It’s an experience. Marami nang dumaang singing competitions diyan. But ‘The Voice’ is truly a stand out because it looks for artistry. You have to have that quality and that voice,” he said.
Aside from MaƱalac, also sitting as coaches are Tony Award winner Lea Salonga, singer-actress Sarah Geronimo and Apl.de.ap of the Black Eyed Peas.
“Iba-iba 'yung mga taste namin. I look for a specific tone and a certain quality, how they attack the song. They have to connect to the lyrics. A lot of people can sing here. But it’s different when you hear the singer connect, that’s something special. 'Yun ang hinahanap ko,” he said.
According to “The Buzz” co-host Toni Gonzaga, who also hosts "The Voice of the Philippines," the rocker was moved to tears after hearing the “beautiful voice” of a contestant.
“Napakahirap na out of the hundreds of singers, pipili lang kayo ng konti. I can’t act eh, I just do my thing lang. Whatever you see, that’s from the heart,” Manalac about the incident.
Asked if it is possible for a singer to fake an emotion, he said: “It is possible. I’ve been doing it for a long time. At some point, there are days na you have it. Minsan you don’t have it, you’re in somewhere else but you have to deliver.”
“The audience doesn’t know what’s happening in your life. It’s all about the song, that’s the bottom line. Even if I don’t feel it, I have to make them understand it,” he said.
"The Voice of the Philippines" is set to air on ABS-CBN on June 15. It will be hosted by celebrity sisters Toni and Alex Gonzaga and former "Pinoy Big Brother" housemate Robi Domingo.
